What Happened to Sublime With Rome?

Sublime With Rome is a band that was formed in 2009 as a continuation of the iconic ska punk band Sublime, following the death of lead singer Bradley Nowell in 1996. The band consists of original Sublime members Eric Wilson (bass) and Bud Gaugh (drums), along with Rome Ramirez (vocals/guitar).

With their unique blend of reggae, punk, and rock, Sublime With Rome quickly gained a dedicated fan base and achieved commercial success. However, their journey has not been without its challenges.

Transitioning from Sublime to Sublime With Rome

After the passing of Bradley Nowell, the remaining members of Sublime were unsure about continuing the band. It was not until 2009 that they decided to move forward with a new vocalist, Rome Ramirez.

This decision did not come without controversy and criticism from some fans who believed that no one could replace Nowell’s distinctive voice. However, Wilson and Gaugh were determined to keep the spirit of Sublime alive while also allowing for growth and evolution.

The New Sound and Direction:

Rome Ramirez brought a fresh perspective to the band, infusing his own musical style into their sound. This resulted in a slight shift towards a more alternative rock sound while still maintaining the ska punk/reggae influences that made Sublime so beloved.

The band released their debut album, “Yours Truly,” in 2011, which featured hit singles like “Panic” and “Take It or Leave It.” The album received mixed reviews from critics but was embraced by fans who appreciated the continuation of Sublime’s legacy.

Challenges Along the Way

Legal Battles:

Sublime With Rome faced legal challenges early on, primarily related to the use of the name “Sublime.” The Nowell estate filed a lawsuit against Wilson and Gaugh, claiming that they did not have the rights to use the name without Nowell’s involvement.

After a settlement was reached, the band agreed to perform under the name Sublime With Rome to distinguish themselves from the original lineup. Despite these legal hurdles, they continued making music and touring.

Changing Lineup:

Over the years, Sublime With Rome experienced several changes in their lineup. In 2011, drummer Bud Gaugh announced his departure from the band for personal reasons. He was replaced by Josh Freese, who had previously played with bands like Nine Inch Nails and The Vandals.

In 2017, Freese left and was replaced by Carlos Verdugo. These lineup changes brought different dynamics and influences to the band but did not deter them from creating new music and touring extensively.

The Present and Future of Sublime With Rome

Musical Evolution:

Sublime With Rome has continued to evolve musically with each album release. Their most recent album, “Blessings,” came out in 2019 and showcased their growth as a band.

The album incorporated elements of hip-hop, pop-rock, and electronic music while still staying true to their ska punk/reggae roots.

Touring:

Despite facing various challenges throughout their career, Sublime With Rome remains an active touring band. They have performed at numerous festivals and embarked on headlining tours around the world.

Their live shows are known for their high energy and for creating an electric atmosphere that captivates both new and old fans.

In conclusion, Sublime With Rome has faced their fair share of ups and downs since their formation. Despite the initial skepticism from some fans, they have managed to carve out their own unique identity while honoring the legacy of Sublime.

With an ever-evolving sound and a dedicated fan base, Sublime With Rome continues to create music and tour, proving that their story is far from over.
