By Robert Palmer

When it comes to travel, adventure and exploration, some of us look for the most exotic and dangerous places to visit.  Whether it’s the vast deserts of the Middle East, the dense jungles of South America, or the treacherous mountain ranges of Asia – we find something thrilling about visiting a place deemed “dangerous”.

While danger can lurk in any corner of the world, certain destinations are more dangerous than others.  Each year, millions of tourists flock to these places – despite their reputation for danger – in search of an adrenaline rush.  From civil unrest and political instability to extreme weather and health risks, here is our list of what is considered to be the most dangerous tourist destination on earth.

1. North Korea: North Korea is one of the most isolated countries in the world. It is also one of the most dangerous places to visit as a tourist. The country has a history of human rights abuses and its strict laws make it difficult (if not impossible) for foreigners to visit without permission from their government.

2. Afghanistan: Afghanistan remains one of the most volatile countries in Central Asia due to its ongoing war with the Taliban. Terrorism, kidnappings and other violent crimes are common here so it’s best for tourists to avoid going there unless absolutely necessary.

3. Somalia: Somalia is one of Africa’s least developed countries and home to some of its most violent militant groups such as Al-Shabaab and ISIS.

The country has been ravaged by civil war since 1991 making it extremely unsafe for visitors.

4. Syria: Syria has been engulfed in civil war since 2011 leaving much destruction in its wake. The country is highly unstable with bombings occurring on a regular basis making it a very dangerous place for tourists.

5. Iraq: Iraq has been plagued by violence since 2003 when US forces invaded. As a result, much of Iraq remains unstable with sectarian violence between Shiites and Sunnis still occurring on a regular basis.
