What Is Stonewall Resort Named After?

By Anna Duncan

Stonewall Resort is a popular destination for vacationers and outdoor enthusiasts in West Virginia. But, have you ever wondered what the resort is named after?

The History of Stonewall Resort

Stonewall Resort is named after Stonewall Jackson, a Confederate general who fought in the American Civil War. The resort is located on the shores of Stonewall Jackson Lake, which was formed by the Stonewall Jackson Dam on the West Fork River.

Who was Stonewall Jackson?

Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson was born on January 21, 1824, in Clarksburg, Virginia (now West Virginia). He graduated from West Point Academy and served in the Mexican-American War before resigning his commission to become a professor at Virginia Military Institute.

When the Civil War broke out, he joined the Confederate Army and quickly rose through the ranks to become one of its most successful commanders. He earned his nickname “Stonewall” during the First Battle of Bull Run in 1861 when he stood firm against Union troops and prevented them from breaking through Confederate lines.

Jackson went on to fight in several major battles including Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. Unfortunately, he was accidentally shot by his own men during the Battle of Chancellorsville and died from complications a few days later.

The Creation of Stonewall Jackson Lake

After World War II, there was a need for flood control measures in West Virginia. The US Army Corps of Engineers proposed building a dam on the West Fork River to control flooding and provide hydroelectric power.

Construction began in 1971 and was completed four years later. The dam created Stonewall Jackson Lake which covers over 2,600 acres with over 82 miles of shoreline.

Conclusion

Stonewall Resort is named after Stonewall Jackson and the lake formed by the Stonewall Jackson Dam. While Jackson’s legacy is controversial due to his involvement in the Confederacy during the Civil War, his name lives on as a tribute to West Virginia’s history and natural beauty.
