By Anna Duncan

Tourism and hospitality are two interconnected industries that play a vital role in the global economy. The World Tourism Organization defines tourism as “a social, cultural, and economic phenomenon that entails the movement of people to countries or places outside their usual environment for personal or business/professional purposes.” Hospitality, on the other hand, refers to the art of welcoming and serving guests.

What Is Tourism?
Tourism is an industry that involves traveling to different places for various reasons such as leisure, business, education, health, or visiting friends and family. It contributes significantly to the economic growth of many countries worldwide. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), international tourist arrivals reached 1.4 billion in 2018, generating over US$1.7 trillion in international tourism receipts.

Why Is Tourism Important?
Tourism has become a vital sector of many economies worldwide due to its significant contributions. It creates jobs for millions of people globally across various sectors such as transportation, accommodation, food and beverage services, entertainment, and recreational activities. Additionally, it generates revenue for governments through taxes and foreign exchange earnings.

Moreover, tourism helps promote cultural exchange by allowing people from different parts of the world to interact with each other. This interaction between tourists and locals can help promote mutual understanding and respect for different cultures.

What Is Hospitality?
Hospitality refers to the art of welcoming guests with warmth and kindness. It is a service-oriented industry that involves providing accommodations, food and beverage services, entertainment activities such as concerts or shows, recreational activities like sports or spas services as well as transportation services like airport pick-up/drop off.

Why Is Hospitality Important?
Hospitality is essential because it helps create a positive experience for guests by providing them with comfortable accommodations and quality services. Good hospitality can lead to customer loyalty which can result in repeat business or referrals to friends and family.

Furthermore, the hospitality industry can create job opportunities for many people worldwide. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), the hospitality industry provided 319 million jobs globally in 2018, which is approximately one in ten jobs worldwide.

In conclusion, tourism and hospitality are two interconnected industries that play a critical role in the global economy. They both provide significant contributions to job creation, foreign exchange earnings, cultural exchange, and economic growth. Therefore it’s crucial that we continue to develop these industries while ensuring sustainable practices are implemented to preserve the environment and communities for future generations.
