What Is the Second Ugliest Building in Prague?

By Michael Ferguson

Prague is home to some of the most stunning architectural marvels in the world. From the Gothic spires of St. Vitus Cathedral to the Baroque beauty of St. Nicholas Church, there is no shortage of breathtaking buildings in this city.

However, not all buildings in Prague are equally pleasing to the eyes. In fact, there is one building that stands out as the second ugliest building in Prague – The Zizkov Television Tower.

What is Zizkov Television Tower?

The Zizkov Television Tower is a 216-meter tall tower located in the Zizkov district of Prague. It was built between 1985 and 1992 and was designed by architect Václav Aulický. The tower has a unique design that resembles an upside-down tree with steel branches that stretch outwards.

Why is it considered ugly?

While some people find the tower’s design unique and futuristic, many others consider it to be an eyesore that clashes with Prague’s historic skyline. One of the main criticisms of the tower is its industrial look, which many feel does not fit with the city’s more traditional architecture.

Another reason why people consider it ugly is because of its history. During communism, the tower was used for spying on citizens and jamming foreign radio signals, which has left a negative stigma attached to it even today.

What’s inside?

Despite its controversial appearance, The Zizkov Television Tower has become a popular tourist attraction in recent years because of what lies inside. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Prague from one of two observation decks located at heights of 93 and 97 meters respectively.

There is also a restaurant called Oblaca located at a height of 66 meters which offers fine dining experiences with breathtaking views over Prague.

The Bottom Line

The Zizkov Television Tower may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it is undoubtedly an interesting piece of architecture that has become an integral part of Prague’s skyline. So, if you’re in the city and looking for some unique views and dining experiences, don’t hesitate to pay the tower a visit!
