What Materials Should You Not Wear While Backpacking and Hiking?

By Alice Nichols

When you are planning to go backpacking or hiking, it is important to wear the right kind of clothing. You need to make sure that your clothing is comfortable and suitable for the activity you are doing.

There are certain materials that should be avoided while backpacking and hiking, as they can be dangerous and uncomfortable.

Cotton – Cotton is a material that absorbs moisture, which can make it very uncomfortable in wet weather conditions. It also takes a long time to dry, which can be problematic if you get caught in the rain or have to cross a river. Cotton is not recommended for backpacking or hiking.

Synthetics – Synthetic materials such as nylon and polyester can be very uncomfortable in hot weather. They don’t allow your skin to breathe and can cause you to become overheated easily. They also tend to get very smelly when they get wet.

Leather – Leather is not a good material for backpacking or hiking as it will become saturated with sweat in warm conditions, making it very uncomfortable and difficult to wear. It also takes a long time to dry out when wet.

Wool – Wool may seem like an ideal material for outdoor activities given its insulating properties, but it has a tendency to hold onto odors and take a long time to dry out when wet. If you do choose wool garments, make sure they are made from lightweight fabrics such as merino wool.

Jeans – Jeans are not suitable for backpacking or hiking as they do not allow your skin enough ventilation and can become very heavy when wet. Additionally, jeans tend to be quite rigid which makes them difficult to move in.

In conclusion, when planning your next outdoor excursion remember that cotton, synthetics, leather, wool and jeans are all materials that should be avoided while backpacking or hiking. Choose lightweight fabrics such as merino wool instead so that you stay comfortable during your adventure.
