What Should You Sit on When Backpacking?

When backpacking, having the right seating is essential for comfort and safety. Whether you are camping in the woods or taking a long-distance hike, having a good seat is an important part of your journey. There are several options available when it comes to seating for backpacking, each with its own pros and cons.


Stools are lightweight and portable, making them ideal for backpacking trips. They are easy to assemble and disassemble and provide a comfortable seating option.

However, they don’t offer much cushioning or support, so they may not be suitable for longer hikes or more strenuous activities.

Camp Chairs

Camp chairs are larger than stools and provide more cushioning and support. They can be folded up for easy storage in your backpack and some models come with adjustable height settings to fit different body types. The downside is that camp chairs can be bulky and heavy, making them less suitable for long hikes.

Logs & Rocks

Logs and rocks make great natural seating options when out on the trail. Both provide plenty of cushioning and support, but logs can be difficult to move around if you need to switch locations. Rocks also tend to be hard on the joints after a while, so they may not be suitable for extended periods of sitting.


When choosing a seating option while backpacking, it’s important to consider your needs as well as the weight of the item you’re carrying. Stools are lightweight but don’t provide much cushioning or support; camp chairs offer more comfort but can be bulky; while logs or rocks make great natural seating but can be difficult to move around or uncomfortable after extended periods of sitting.
