What to Bring Backpacking With Dogs?

By Robert Palmer

If you’re a hiker and an animal lover, the prospect of backpacking with a canine companion is probably exciting. But before you and your pup hit the trail, there are some important things to consider.

Just like humans, dogs require certain items for their health and safety. Here’s what to bring when backpacking with your dog.

Food and Water

When backpacking with dogs, it’s important to bring enough food and water for both you and your pet. It’s a good idea to bring more than what you think you’ll need in case of an emergency.

Make sure that the food is lightweight and easy to transport. Additionally, if your dog has any dietary restrictions or allergies, be sure to pack food that meets those needs.

First Aid Kit

You should always have a first aid kit when backpacking with dogs as accidents can happen. The kit should include bandages, antibiotic ointment, gauze pads, tweezers, scissors, antihistamine pills (in case of allergic reactions), and anything else that might be useful in an emergency situation. It’s also a good idea to research canine first aid before your trip so that you know how to treat any potential injuries or ailments.

Collar & Leash

Bringing along a collar & leash is essential for backpacking with dogs. Even if your pup is well-trained and follows commands most of the time, having them on a leash will keep them safe from potential dangers such as wildlife or other hikers on the trail.

Waste Bags

No matter how well-trained they are, all dogs need bathroom breaks while hiking.

To make sure that everyone enjoys their experience on the trail it’s important that pet owners pick up after their pups by bringing along waste bags. Not only will this ensure that the trail remains clean but it will also help reduce any potential spread of disease amongst animals.

Dog Booties

Hiking trails can be rough on even the toughest of paws so it’s important to bring along dog booties for extra protection from sharp rocks or other hazards. Dog booties also provide insulation from cold temperatures in winter months which can help keep your pup warm while out in nature.

By packing these essentials before hitting the trail you can ensure that both you and your pup have an enjoyable outdoor experience!
