When Did Bangkok Become a Tourist Destination?

By Robert Palmer

Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Asia. The city has been a tourist destination since the late 19th century.

It has been a major port for centuries, and it is one of the most visited cities in the world. The city offers something for everyone, from world-class shopping and dining to cultural attractions and natural wonders.

Bangkok was originally founded as a small trading post on the banks of the Chao Phraya River in 1548. It grew rapidly over the next few centuries and became an important trading center in Southeast Asia. The city was known as Krung Thep (City of Angels) at this time, and it quickly became an important port for traders from Europe, India, China and other parts of Asia.

By the late 1800s, Bangkok had become an attractive destination for Western tourists. In 1883, King Chulalongkorn built a number of grand palace buildings which are now some of Bangkok’s main attractions. As well as this, in 1897 Queen Saovabha Phongsri opened up some areas of the Grand Palace complex to tourists who were keen to explore them.

The first hotel specifically designed for tourists opened up in 1906. This allowed more visitors to come to Bangkok and experience its unique culture and sights. As more hotels opened up over time, Bangkok gradually developed into one of Asia’s most popular tourist destinations.

Nowadays Bangkok is home to some of Southeast Asia’s most famous attractions such as Wat Phra Kaew temple complex (the Temple Of Emerald Buddha), Sukhumvit Road nightlife district and Yaowarat Chinatown. With its vibrant street food culture, bustling markets and friendly locals it continues to draw visitors from all over the world.

Conclusion:

It can be seen that Bangkok has been a popular tourist destination since the late 19th century due to its rich history and cultural attractions. Its popularity increased further with the opening of hotels designed specifically for tourists in 1906 which allowed more people to visit this amazing city. Today it remains one of Asia’s top tourist destinations with its vast array of attractions.
