By Robert Palmer

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, has been a popular tourist destination for more than 100 years. It is known for its beautiful beaches, unique attractions, and exciting nightlife. The city was first developed as a resort town in the late 19th century when wealthy families from the North began to vacation there.

Myrtle Beach’s popularity as a tourist destination began in the early 1900s when the railroad was built through the city. This made it easier for people to travel from other cities to Myrtle Beach and opened up the area to more visitors. The first hotel on the beach was built in 1911 and quickly became a popular spot for tourists.

In the 1920s and 1930s, Myrtle Beach saw an influx of visitors who wanted to enjoy its natural beauty and warm climate. During this time, numerous hotels, motels, and restaurants were built along Ocean Boulevard to accommodate these visitors. Over time, more attractions were added such as mini-golf courses and amusement parks.

The 1950s marked a period of rapid growth for Myrtle Beach as it became known as an ideal family vacation spot. Hotels were upgraded with modern amenities such as air conditioning, swimming pools, and tennis courts; and new attractions opened up including theme parks like Family Kingdom Amusement Park and water parks like Wild Water & Wheels.

Since then Myrtle Beach has continued to be one of America’s most popular beach destinations with more than 14 million visitors each year coming to enjoy its scenic beauty and exciting attractions. With over 60 miles of sandy beaches, hundreds of golf courses, shopping outlets, restaurants, theaters and many other entertainment options; it’s no wonder why Myrtle Beach remains one of America’s favorite vacation spots.
