When Was the Last Cruise Ship Accident?

By Alice Nichols

Cruise ships are a popular choice for vacations, but accidents can happen. A cruise ship accident is an incident involving a passenger vessel, usually involving serious injury or death. The last major cruise ship accident occurred in January 2013, when the Costa Concordia capsized off the coast of Italy.

The Costa Concordia was carrying more than 4,200 passengers and crew when it struck a reef and began to take on water. The captain of the ship attempted to maneuver the vessel closer to shore but this did not work.

As the ship began to sink, many of the passengers were forced to abandon ship in lifeboats or jump into the cold waters below. In total, 32 people died as a result of this tragic accident.

Since then, there have been several other minor cruise accidents but none as catastrophic as the Costa Concordia disaster. In July 2014, a fire broke out on board Royal Caribbean’s Grandeur of the Seas while it was at sea near Baltimore, Maryland. The fire caused significant damage to cabins and public areas but thankfully no one was injured and all passengers were able to disembark safely back on shore.

In October 2015, Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas encountered an unexpected storm off Cape Hatteras that caused some minor damage and injuries among its 4500 passengers and crew. This was followed by another incident in 2016 when Celebrity Cruises’ Silhouette experiencedtechnical issues resulting in delayed disembarkation for its passengers at their final port of call in Florida.

More recently in 2018, there have been reports of passengers falling ill on board multiple vessels operated by Carnival Cruise Lines due to contaminated food or water supplies onboard their ships. Fortunately, none of these incidents have resulted in serious injury or death for any passengers or crew members aboard these vessels.
