When Was the Last Time Barcelona Conceded 8?

By Michael Ferguson

Barcelona is one of the most successful soccer clubs in the world. They have won numerous domestic and international titles, and are known for their attacking style of play.

However, there have been a few occasions where they have been on the receiving end of some heavy defeats. One such instance was when they conceded 8 goals in a single match.

The last time Barcelona conceded 8 goals was in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League in the 2019-20 season. They were up against Bayern Munich, another powerhouse in European soccer. The match took place on August 14, 2020, at the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon.

The match started off with both teams looking to attack and create chances. However, it was Bayern Munich who struck first blood in the 4th minute through Thomas Muller. Barcelona responded quickly with an equalizer from David Alaba’s own goal in the 7th minute.

But that was as good as it got for Barcelona as Bayern went on to score three more goals before halftime through Ivan Perisic (21′), Serge Gnabry (27′), and Muller again (31′). Heading into halftime, Barcelona were down by four goals and had a mountain to climb if they were to get back into the game.

Unfortunately for them, things only got worse after halftime. Joshua Kimmich scored a screamer from outside the box in the 63rd minute to make it 5-1 for Bayern. Barcelona did manage to score another consolation goal through Luis Suarez in the 57th minute but it was too little too late.

Bayern continued their onslaught with three more goals from Robert Lewandowski (82′), Philippe Coutinho (85′,88′) which brought an end to one of Barcelona’s worst performances in recent memory.

To put things into perspective, this was only the second time in Barcelona’s history that they had conceded 8 goals in a single match. The first time was way back in 1946 when they lost 8-0 to Sevilla.

In conclusion, the last time Barcelona conceded 8 goals was in the 2019-20 Champions League quarterfinals against Bayern Munich. It was a night to forget for Barcelona fans and players alike, as they were completely outplayed by a well-oiled Bayern machine.
