Where Are the Best Places to See Puffins?

If you’re looking for a memorable experience, chances are that seeing some puffins in their natural habitat is at the top of your list. Puffins are one of the most iconic and beloved birds in the world, and they have captivated humans with their vivid colors and unique behaviors for centuries. Seeing them in the wild is an unforgettable experience, and luckily there are a few places around the world that offer excellent opportunities for spotting these delightful creatures.

The United Kingdom

The UK is home to puffins all year round, but they are most visible during their breeding season which runs from April to August. The best places to spot them in the UK include the Isle of May off the coast of Scotland, Bempton Cliffs in Yorkshire, Grassholm Island off Wales and Skomer Island off Pembrokeshire.


Iceland is one of the best places to see puffins in their natural habitat. This remote island nation has a large population of Atlantic puffins, which can be seen from mid-April through late August. Popular locations for spotting puffins include Látrabjarg along the western coast, Vestmannaeyjar off the south coast, Dyrhólaey near Vík and Grímsey Island in the north.


Maine is one of only two states in North America where you can spot Atlantic puffins. These birds can be found along Maine’s rocky coastline from April through August. Some of the best places to see them include Machias Seal Island, Matinicus Rock and Eastern Egg Rock.
