The North Carolina Mountains are one of the most beautiful and serene places to visit in the United States. With their towering peaks, lush forests, and breathtaking views, it’s no wonder why so many people flock to these majestic mountains.

But with so many places to stay in the area, it can be hard to decide where is best. Here are some of the best places to stay in the North Carolina Mountains.


Highlands-Cashiers is a popular spot due to its close proximity to both Highlands and Cashiers. It offers a variety of options for accommodations, ranging from camping and cabins to luxury resorts.

There are also plenty of things to do in the area, including hiking, fishing, boating, and golfing. The nearby towns offer a variety of shops and restaurants as well.

Fontana Dam

Fontana Dam is an ideal spot for those looking for a quiet getaway in the mountains. It’s surrounded by lush forest on both sides and has plenty of trails for hiking and biking.

The nearby lake offers great fishing opportunities as well as beautiful views of Fontana Lake from atop the dam. There are several cabins available for rent at Fontana Dam that can accommodate up to eight people.

There are plenty of attractions in town such as Harrah’s casino and Oconaluftee Indian Village as well as outdoor activities like fly fishing or tubing down Deep Creek. There are several lodges where guests can stay while visiting Cherokee.


Boone is located just south of Asheville and is known for its vibrant downtown area with lots of shopping, dining, and entertainment options. It’s also home to Appalachian State University which makes it popular with college students during school breaks or summer vacations. Boone has something for everyone with plenty of outdoor activities like skiing at nearby Sugar Mountain Resort or tubing down Watauga River.
