The Diamond Princess cruise ship is currently located off the coast of Yokohama, Japan. The ship has been at the center of an international health crisis since February 2020, when it became the epicenter of a massive Coronavirus outbreak. As of April 2020, there have been 696 confirmed cases and seven fatalities linked to the Diamond Princess.

The Diamond Princess was initially quarantined by Japanese health officials on February 4th after a former passenger tested positive for the virus. In total, 3,711 passengers and crew members were onboard at the time of the quarantine. The decision to keep everyone onboard was made in order to contain the spread of the virus and provide medical attention to those who needed it.

Since then, the ship has become a symbol for the global health crisis that has affected millions around the world. In an effort to protect passengers and crew members from further infection, strict quarantine protocols have been put in place. Over time, those who showed no symptoms were allowed to disembark and return home while those with symptoms remained aboard for treatment.

The most recent update from Japan’s Ministry of Health states that 581 passengers and 24 crew members are still onboard as of April 21st. This number is down significantly from when the quarantine first began, but several dozen new cases continue to be reported each day as testing continues onboard.
