Where Is the Grandfather Who Dropped Baby on Cruise Ship?

By Robert Palmer

The world was shocked when an 18-month-old girl was dropped from a cruise ship balcony by her grandfather. The incident occurred in July 2019, when the family of four were enjoying a Mediterranean cruise aboard the MSC Opera. The grandfather, who has been identified as 49-year-old Italian man Salvatore Anello, was holding his granddaughter Chloe Wiegand on the balcony when he lost his grip and dropped her 11 stories to the dock below.

The tragedy sparked an international debate about safety on cruise ships and sparked numerous questions, including “where is the grandfather who dropped baby on cruise ship?”

In August 2019, Anello was charged with manslaughter in Puerto Rico and released on $80,000 bail. Since then, he has been living in Italy with his family while he awaits trial.

In April 2020, Anello agreed to waive extradition and plead guilty to negligent homicide in Puerto Rico in exchange for a reduced sentence of three years probation and a suspended prison term. He is expected to face sentencing in October 2020.

The incident has raised serious questions about safety onboard cruise ships, particularly when it comes to balconies. Cruise companies have since implemented stricter safety measures that require balcony railings to be at least 42 inches high or tall enough that young children cannot climb over them.

The tragedy has also highlighted the importance of parental supervision; parents should always be aware of their child’s whereabouts and pay close attention to any potential hazards or risks around them.

Anello’s case is still ongoing and many questions still remain unanswered about what happened that day. But regardless of what happens in court, this heartbreaking story serves as a reminder of how important it is for parents to always be vigilant and aware of their children’s safety while aboard a cruise ship – or anywhere else for that matter.
