Where Is Viking Sky Cruise Ship Now?

By Michael Ferguson

The Viking Sky cruise ship has been a part of the news cycle in recent weeks. After encountering challenging conditions in the North Sea off the coast of Norway in March 2019, the Viking Sky was forced to make an emergency call for help and evacuate its passengers. After being towed to Molde, Norway, the Viking Sky is now being repaired and upgraded at Fosen Yards in Rissa, Norway.

The Viking Sky is owned by Viking Ocean Cruises, a subsidiary of Viking Cruises. The ship is a 930-foot long vessel that was launched in 2017 and can accommodate up to 930 passengers. It features seven decks, including two dedicated to dining and entertainment, as well as a variety of public spaces including lounges, a spa and fitness center, and even a cinema.

On March 23rd 2019, the ship encountered engine problems off the coast of Norway and had to be towed into port by rescue vessels. More than 1,300 passengers had to be rescued from the vessel as it was battered by waves as high as 10 meters (33 feet) during its ordeal. Fortunately, no one was injured during this incident.

After arriving at Molde port on March 24th 2019, the Viking Sky underwent an initial assessment by marine engineers. It was then decided that it would be best for repairs and upgrades to take place at Fosen Yards in Rissa.

Work on the ship began at Fosen Yards in April 2019 and is expected to be completed by June 2019. The work includes repairs to engines and hulls damaged during its ordeal as well as upgrades such as improved navigation systems and new lifeboats.

The Viking Sky cruise ship is currently undergoing repairs and upgrades at Fosen Yards in Rissa, Norway after encountering engine problems off the coast of Norway in March 2019. Work on the ship is expected to be completed by June 2019 so that it can resume sailing again soon after.
