Where Should I Go on a Road Trip From Chicago in Winter?

Winter in Chicago can be brutal, but that doesn’t mean you have to stay cooped up indoors! A road trip is the perfect way to explore some of the nearby destinations and take in the beauty of the season. Here are a few ideas for where to go on a road trip from Chicago in winter.

1. Galena, Illinois

Located about 160 miles west of Chicago, Galena is a charming town known for its historic architecture and picturesque surroundings.

In winter, it becomes a winter wonderland with plenty of opportunities for skiing, snowmobiling, and ice skating.

What to do:

  • Visit Chestnut Mountain Resort for skiing and snowboarding
  • Explore the quaint shops and restaurants on Main Street
  • Take a scenic drive through nearby countryside

2. Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Just 90 miles north of Chicago, Lake Geneva is a popular resort town with plenty of winter activities. The lake itself freezes over, creating a magical setting for ice fishing, skating, and even kite skiing.

3. Saugatuck, Michigan

4. Indianapolis, Indiana
