Which Countries Have Not Signed Paris Agreement?

By Anna Duncan

The Paris Agreement is a landmark agreement signed by countries across the world in 2015. Its goal is to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and to pursue efforts towards limiting the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

However, not all countries have signed this agreement. Let’s take a look at which countries have not yet signed on.

Countries that have not signed the Paris Agreement:

  • Iran: Iran has not ratified the Paris Agreement yet, but it did sign it in April 2016.
  • Turkmenistan: Turkmenistan has not signed or ratified the Paris Agreement yet.
  • Eritrea: Eritrea has not signed or ratified the Paris Agreement yet.
  • South Sudan: South Sudan has not signed or ratified the Paris Agreement yet.
  • Yemen: Yemen has not signed or ratified the Paris Agreement yet.

Why have these countries not signed?

Iran

Iran’s delay in ratifying the agreement is due to economic sanctions imposed on them by other countries. These sanctions have restricted Iran’s access to international finance, making it difficult for them to implement measures required by the agreement.

Turkmenistan

Turkmenistan is a country with significant natural gas reserves and exports. As a result, they may be hesitant to sign an agreement that could limit their ability to sell fossil fuels on international markets.

Eritrea and South Sudan

Eritrea and South Sudan are both small and developing countries that may not have the resources to prioritize signing the agreement at this time.

Yemen

Yemen is currently in a state of war and political upheaval, which may be a reason for their delay in signing the Paris Agreement.

Conclusion

While most countries have signed the Paris Agreement, there are still a few that have not. The reasons for their delay in signing vary from economic sanctions to political instability.

However, it’s important to note that all countries must work together to combat climate change and protect our planet.
