Which Cruise Ships Are Being Scrapped?

By Michael Ferguson

Cruise ships, like any other mode of transportation, have a lifespan. They are built to last several decades, but eventually, they must be retired. Some ships are sold to other companies or used for different purposes like housing or office space, but many end up being scrapped.

So which cruise ships are being scrapped? Let’s take a look at some of the most recent examples.

1. Carnival Fantasy

Carnival Fantasy was one of the oldest ships in the Carnival Cruise Line fleet.

Built in 1990, it had a capacity of over 2,000 passengers and had sailed all over the world. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting downturn in the cruise industry, Carnival announced that Fantasy would be sold for scrap in July 2020.

2. Pullmantur Monarch

The Spanish cruise line Pullmantur filed for bankruptcy in June 2020 and subsequently announced that two of its ships would be scrapped, including the Monarch. The ship had a long history dating back to 1991 when it was built as Royal Caribbean’s Monarch of the Seas before being transferred to Pullmantur in 2013.

3. Costa Victoria

The Costa Victoria was another casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic. Costa Cruises announced in July 2020 that it would be selling the ship for scrap after it had been sitting idle since March due to travel restrictions and health concerns.

4. Majesty Cruise Line’s Majesty

The Majesty was built in 1991 as part of Royal Caribbean’s Sovereign class of ships before being transferred to Majesty Cruise Line in 1997.

The small cruise line operated for several years before going bankrupt in 2009. The ship sat idle until it was sold for scrap in 2019.

5. Crystal Harmony

The Crystal Harmony was a popular ship for luxury cruise line Crystal Cruises.

Built in 1990, it had a loyal following of repeat passengers who loved its elegant decor and exceptional service. However, the ship was retired in 2005 and sold for scrap in 2018.

Conclusion

Scrapping cruise ships is always a sad occasion, especially for those who have sailed on them and have fond memories of their time onboard. However, it’s a necessary part of the industry’s lifecycle as companies must make room for newer, more modern ships to meet the expectations of today’s travelers.
