Who Are the Barcelona Defenders?

By Anna Duncan

Barcelona is one of the most successful football clubs in the world, known for its attacking style of play. However, in order to execute this style effectively, a strong defense is crucial. In this article, we will take a closer look at the Barcelona defenders and their roles within the team.

The Starting Center-Backs

The two starting center-backs for Barcelona are Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet. Pique is an experienced defender who has been with the club since 2008.

He is known for his physicality and aerial ability, making him a dominant force in defensive set pieces. Lenglet, on the other hand, joined Barcelona in 2018 as a promising young talent from Sevilla. He has quickly established himself as a key player in the team, with his excellent positioning and tackling skills.

The Full-Backs

Barcelona’s full-backs are responsible for providing width to the team’s attacking play while also maintaining defensive stability. On the right side, Sergi Roberto is currently the first-choice full-back.

He is versatile enough to play in midfield or defense and has excellent crossing ability. On the left side, Jordi Alba is an attacking-minded full-back who loves to overlap and make runs into space behind opposition defenses.

The Backup Center-Backs

In case of injuries or suspensions to Pique or Lenglet, Barcelona has two reliable backup center-backs: Samuel Umtiti and Ronald Araujo. Umtiti has struggled with injuries over recent seasons but when fit he provides a solid defensive option due to his physicality and speed.

Araujo is a young Uruguayan center-back who was promoted from Barcelona B in 2019. He has shown great promise with his athleticism and reading of the game.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Barcelona defenders are an essential part of the team’s success. With Pique and Lenglet providing a solid foundation at center-back and Roberto and Alba contributing to both attack and defense from the full-back positions, Barcelona has a strong defensive unit. Additionally, with Umtiti and Araujo available as backup options, Barcelona can be confident in their ability to handle any defensive challenges that come their way.
