Who Are the Neighbors in Christmas Vacation?

By Alice Nichols

If you’re a fan of the classic holiday movie, Christmas Vacation, you may have noticed that the Griswold family has some interesting neighbors. Let’s take a closer look at who they are and what they bring to the film.

The Johnsons

One of the most memorable neighbors in Christmas Vacation is the Johnson family. Led by husband and wife duo Todd and Margo, this couple is known for their snarky comments and sophisticated demeanor. They are often seen looking down on the antics of the Griswold family, but they eventually get caught up in the chaos themselves.

Todd: Played by Nicholas Guest, Todd is a businessman who takes himself very seriously. He’s always dressed in business attire and seems to be more concerned with his lawn than anything else. Todd has a tendency to speak in corporate jargon and is quick to criticize those around him.

Margo: Played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Margo is Todd’s wife and just as snobby as he is. She’s a fitness enthusiast who always looks perfect, even when she’s covered in sewage (as happens in one memorable scene). Margo isn’t afraid to speak her mind and often clashes with Clark Griswold.

The Squirrel

While not technically human, the squirrel that terrorizes the Griswold family is definitely one of their most memorable neighbors. The squirrel first makes an appearance when it jumps out of their Christmas tree and wreaks havoc on their house. Later on, when Clark tries to catch it, he accidentally sets off a chain reaction that leads to him falling off his roof.

Eddie

Last but certainly not least is Eddie – played by Randy Quaid – who isn’t technically a neighbor but rather a relative of the Griswolds. Eddie shows up unexpectedly with his wife and kids in tow, and proceeds to make himself at home.

He’s a lovable goofball who is always wearing a white bathrobe and drinking beer. Eddie is also known for his rusty old RV, which he parks in front of the Griswolds’ house.

  • In Conclusion

While the Griswolds may not have the most normal neighbors, they certainly add to the chaos and humor of Christmas Vacation. From the snobby Johnsons to the crazy squirrel to lovable Eddie, each character brings their own unique brand of comedy to the film. So next time you watch this holiday classic, be sure to pay attention to these memorable characters!
