Who Controls a Cruise Ship?

By Michael Ferguson

A cruise ship is one of the most popular ways to travel. But who is actually in control of such a large vessel? The answer is surprisingly complex and involves a variety of people and organizations.

At the top of the command chain, the cruise line itself has ultimate authority over the vessel. This company sets policies that are enforced by the captain, crew, and other personnel.

The cruise line will usually hire an experienced captain to lead their ships. Captains have full authority over their crew and all decisions regarding safety and operations are made with their approval.

The captain is assisted by several officers who are responsible for various aspects of running the ship. These officers include a first officer, chief engineer, navigator, purser, and chief medical officer. Each of these officers has specialized knowledge that helps ensure that operations are conducted safely and efficiently.

The crew members on board a cruise ship also play an important role in keeping it running smoothly. There are several types of personnel including housekeeping staff, kitchen staff, stewards, technicians and engineers. All these individuals have specific responsibilities which must be carried out in order to keep the ship functioning properly.

In addition to these individuals there are also various agencies which have oversight on cruise ships. These include maritime authorities like the United States Coast Guard as well as safety organizations such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO). These organizations set rules and regulations which all vessels must comply with in order to operate safely.

Conclusion:

Ultimately it is the cruise line itself that has ultimate control over a cruise ship; however, they rely on captains, officers and crew members on board to help carry out their policies safely and efficiently. Additionally, there are several agencies which provide oversight to ensure vessels abide by international regulations for safe navigation.
