Who Founded Paris?

By Robert Palmer

Paris, the capital city of France, is an iconic landmark that has been a center of art, culture, and history since time immemorial. The city’s rich history dates back to over 2,000 years ago when it was founded by a tribe of Celtic people known as the Parisii.

The Parisii – Founders of Paris

The Parisii were a Gaulish tribe that settled in the area around 250 BC. They built their settlement on the Île de la Cité, which is now considered as the heart of Paris. The name ‘Paris’ itself is believed to have been derived from the name of this tribe.

The Parisii were skilled craftsmen and farmers who thrived in the fertile land along the Seine River. They built their homes from wood and mud and lived in small communities that were ruled by chieftains.

The Roman Influence

In 52 BC, Julius Caesar conquered Gaul and brought it under Roman rule. The Romans recognized the strategic importance of Paris and established a military camp on the left bank of the Seine River. They called it Lutetia Parisiorum or ‘Lutetia of the Parisii’.

Under Roman rule, Lutetia flourished and grew into an important trading center. The Romans built roads, bridges, public baths, temples, and an amphitheater in Lutetia.

The Rise of Christianity

In the 3rd century AD, Christianity began to spread throughout Roman Gaul. Saint Denis, one of the first Christian missionaries in France, was martyred on Montmartre Hill in northern Paris.

Following his death, a cathedral was built on the site where he was buried. This cathedral became known as Notre-Dame de Paris and remains one of the most iconic landmarks in Paris to this day.

The Middle Ages

In the 5th century AD, the Western Roman Empire collapsed and Paris fell into chaos. The city was invaded by Germanic tribes such as the Franks and the Vikings.

In the 10th century, Paris became the capital of the Kingdom of France under the rule of the Capetian dynasty. The city saw a period of growth and prosperity during this time, with trade and commerce flourishing.

The Modern Era

Paris played a crucial role in some of the most significant events in modern history. During the French Revolution, Paris became a center of political upheaval and social change.

In the 19th century, Baron Haussmann transformed Paris into a modern city with wide boulevards, parks, and public spaces. This period saw an explosion in art, literature, and philosophy that came to be known as ‘La Belle Époque’ or ‘The Beautiful Era’.

The Conclusion

The city of Paris has come a long way since its humble beginnings as a Celtic settlement. From Roman rule to Christian influences to periods of growth and prosperity, Paris has seen it all.

Today, Paris remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. The city’s rich history is reflected in its architecture, museums, art galleries, and cuisine.

Paris may have been founded by the Parisii over 2,000 years ago but its legacy lives on as one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
