Who Founded Rome: Romulus or Remus?

Rome, the ancient city known for its rich history and grandeur, has a fascinating origin story. According to legend, Rome was founded by twin brothers named Romulus and Remus. However, the question of who exactly founded Rome has been a subject of debate among historians for centuries.

The Legend

The legend goes that Romulus and Remus were born to the Vestal Virgin Rhea Silvia and the god Mars. Amulius, their great-uncle and king of Alba Longa, feared that they would grow up to challenge his rule. To prevent this, he ordered them to be abandoned in a basket on the banks of the Tiber River.

Fortunately for the twins, they were discovered by a she-wolf who nursed them until they were found by a shepherd named Faustulus. Faustulus and his wife raised Romulus and Remus as their own.

The Rivalry

As they grew older, Romulus and Remus became natural leaders with strong personalities. They decided to establish their own city but could not agree on its location. According to one version of the story, Romulus preferred the Palatine Hill while Remus favored the Aventine Hill.

In an attempt to settle their disagreement, they sought divine intervention. They agreed that each would watch for signs from the gods to determine who had received their favor.

  • Remus’ Sign: As Remus observed from the Aventine Hill, six vultures appeared overhead.
  • Romulus’ Sign: Meanwhile, on the Palatine Hill, twelve vultures appeared before Romulus.

Seeing more vultures as a sign of greater favor, Romulus claimed victory and decided to proceed with the founding of Rome on the Palatine Hill.

The Tragic End

Remus, feeling slighted by his brother’s decision, mocked the height of the newly built walls of Rome. In a fit of anger, Romulus killed Remus, solidifying his position as the sole founder of Rome.

In Conclusion

While the legend suggests that both Romulus and Remus played significant roles in the founding of Rome, it is ultimately Romulus who is credited as its founder. The city of Rome went on to become one of the most powerful and influential civilizations in history.

So next time you visit Rome and marvel at its architectural wonders, remember the tale of Romulus and Remus – brothers whose rivalry shaped the destiny of this magnificent city.
