Patel has been an active member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since 1986. He was first elected to the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1990 from Narsinghpur constituency. He served as Cabinet Minister for Culture, Public Relations, Science & Technology from 2003-2008 in Madhya Pradesh.

In May 2014, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Damoh constituency in Madhya Pradesh. He was re-elected from Damoh in May 2019 with a huge margin.
