Who Jumped From the Carnival Cruise Ship?

By Alice Nichols

On July 13th, 2019, a Carnival Cruise Ship passenger was reported to have gone overboard while the ship was sailing in the Mediterranean Sea. The passenger, whose identity has yet to be released, was noticed to be missing by crew members during a routine headcount. The incident occurred at approximately 4:00 a.m. local time and the ship immediately began searching for the missing individual.

Rescue operations for the missing passenger were conducted by both Carnival Cruise Ship personnel as well as authorities from nearby Italian ports. A helicopter from an Italian Navy ship and rescue vessels from nearby ports aided in the search efforts. Though initial rescue operations continued until dusk on July 14th, 2019, they were unfortunately unsuccessful in locating the missing passenger.

The cruise line has stated that they are cooperating with authorities investigating this incident and that they are doing all they can to support the family of the missing person. Further statements from Carnival Cruise Line have not been released.

At this time it is unknown who jumped from the Carnival Cruise Ship or why they decided to jump overboard, though investigations by Carnival Cruise Line and local Italian authorities are ongoing. This tragedy serves as a reminder of how quickly something can go wrong when people are out on open waters.
