The Marco Polo Cruise Ship is a project of the China Merchants Group, which has been a leader in the Chinese shipping industry since its founding in 1872. The ship was built in 1965 and is the oldest active cruise liner in the world. It has been on numerous voyages around the world, including to Antarctica and the Arctic Circle, as well as to many ports in Europe.

The Marco Polo Cruise Line was originally owned by Chandris Fantasy Cruises Ltd., which is now known as Celestyal Cruises. In 2002, Celestyal Cruises sold the ship to Global Cruise Lines, who kept it for six years before selling it to Transocean Tours. Transocean Tours operated the vessel until 2011 when it was purchased by Orient Lines, who renamed it MS Marco Polo II and placed her back into service.

In 2016, the Marco Polo Cruise Line was acquired by Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV) for $8 million USD. CMV operates several other vessels, including Magellan and Columbus.

Since being acquired by CMV, Marco Polo has continued to offer cruises around Europe and other destinations. In 2019, CMV announced that they were selling Marco Polo due to financial difficulties and that they would be replacing her with a newer vessel.
