Who Won the Best Baguette in Paris?

By Alice Nichols

In the city of love, Paris, bakeries are a dime a dozen. However, only a select few can claim to have the best baguette in town. Every year, an esteemed panel of judges conducts a blind taste test to determine the winner of the prestigious “Grand Prix de la Baguette de Tradition Française de la Ville de Paris,” or simply put, the best baguette in Paris.

This year’s winner was announced on April 26th, 2021. Out of 225 entries, the top prize went to Bakery L’Ambassade d’Auvergne located in the 3rd arrondissement.

What makes a great baguette?

As per French tradition, a perfect baguette should be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It should have a distinct aroma and flavor that comes from using high-quality ingredients like flour, water, salt, and yeast.

The Judges

The panel of judges consists of some of Paris’s most respected bakers and food critics. This year’s jury included Chef Thierry Marx from Mandarin Oriental Hotel and Philippe Conticini from Gâteaux d’Emotions.

The Prize

The coveted prize includes €4,000 in cash and an opportunity to supply bread to Élysée Palace – home to French President Emmanuel Macron.

Previous Winners

Bakeries like Le Grenier à Pain and Au Levain du Marais have won this prestigious award multiple times in previous years.
