Why Does Paris Smell Like Pee?

By Robert Palmer

Paris is often considered one of the most romantic cities in the world, but it has a notorious reputation for smelling like pee. This unpleasant odor can be found in many parts of the city, especially in narrow alleys and corners. The question arises – Why does Paris smell like pee?

There are several reasons why Paris has such an unpleasant odor. One of the biggest reasons is the lack of public restrooms.

Paris has a population of over 2 million people, and its narrow streets and alleys don’t leave much room for public facilities. As a result, many tourists and locals alike resort to relieving themselves on the streets or in alleyways, which creates a strong smell.

Another reason is that Paris has an outdated sewage system which can’t handle heavy rainfall or floods. During heavy rainfalls, excess water flows into the sewage system, causing it to overflow and mix with other waste materials, creating a pungent smell that can linger for days.

Additionally, Paris has a large population of homeless people who often sleep on sidewalks or in parks. Unfortunately, some may also use these areas as toilets leading to further odors.

Moreover, during hot summer months when temperatures rise above 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit), urine tends to evaporate quickly creating an unbearable stench in some areas.

To combat this issue, local authorities have installed public urinals known as “uritrottoirs” across the city. These eco-friendly urinals are essentially flower boxes with built-in urinals that collect urine that then acts as fertilizer for plants.

In conclusion, while Paris may be known for its beauty and romance it’s important to understand that the city also faces challenges such as poor infrastructure and lack of resources which contribute to its unpleasant odor. However, with new initiatives like eco-friendly urinals being introduced we hope to see improvements soon!
