Can a Whale Hit a Cruise Ship?

By Alice Nichols

Whales are the largest mammals in the ocean and are capable of tremendous power. This has led to speculation about whether or not a whale could potentially hit and damage a cruise ship. The short answer is yes, it is possible for a whale to hit and damage a cruise ship.

Size, Speed and Force

The size, speed and force of whales makes them a potential threat to cruise ships. Whales can reach lengths of up to 100 feet and weigh as much as 190 tons.

They can swim at speeds up to 25 miles per hour, and they are capable of exerting tremendous force with their tails. These factors make it possible for a whale to cause considerable damage if it were to come into contact with a cruise ship.

Collisions

There have been instances in which whales have collided with vessels in the past. In 2010, an 80-foot blue whale struck the bow of an Alaskan fishing vessel, damaging its hull and causing it to take on water.

In 2012, an Orca whale collided with a ferry off the coast of Vancouver Island in Canada, causing minor damage to the vessel’s hull. These reports demonstrate that whales can indeed cause significant damage when they collide with vessels like cruise ships.

Protection

Cruise ships often take precautions against collisions with whales by using sonar technology or visual observation from lookouts on board the ship. However, despite these measures, there is still always some risk of collision due to the unpredictable nature of whales, especially when travelling through areas where there is dense marine life such as near coral reefs or migration routes for large pods of whales.

Conclusion
In conclusion, while it is unlikely that a whale will ever hit a cruise ship due to their size and speed alone, it is still possible for them to cause significant damage if they do come into contact with one another due to their sheer force and size. Cruise ships should take necessary precautions when travelling through areas known for high levels of marine life in order to reduce the risk of collision between vessels and whales.
