How Big Is the Biggest Cruise Ship Compared to Titanic?

By Robert Palmer

The world’s biggest cruise ship, the Royal Caribbean Symphony of the Seas, is one of the most impressive vessels ever built. At a whopping 228,081 gross tonnage, it dwarfs its predecessor, the Titanic, which weighed in at 46,328 gross tonnage.

The Symphony of the Seas is 40% larger than its sister ships in the Oasis Class and is currently the world’s largest cruise ship.

The Symphony of the Seas was built by STX France in St. Nazaire, France and launched in 2018. It has 18 decks and can accommodate 5,518 passengers at double occupancy and up to 6,680 passengers with a variety of cabin types ranging from interior cabins to suites.

The sheer size of the Symphony of the Seas is difficult to comprehend; it is longer than four football fields laid end-to-end and has more than 2,759 staterooms. It also features an impressive range of amenities such as two water slides, two surf simulators, a zip line and four swimming pools. Onboard entertainment includes an ice rink, a theatre and even a casino.

The Titanic was much smaller than modern cruise ships like the Symphony of the Seas but it was still an impressive vessel for its time. Built by Harland & Wolff in Belfast in 1912 it was 882 feet 9 inches long with a gross tonnage of 46,328 and could accommodate 2,435 passengers at double occupancy.

Titanic featured luxurious amenities such as libraries, cafes and grand staircases that were considered extraordinary for its time but were nothing compared to those found on modern cruise ships like Symphony of the Seas today.

Conclusion:

It’s clear that modern cruise ships like Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas are far bigger than their predecessors like Titanic. The size difference between them is almost five times bigger; while Titanic measured 882 feet 9 inches long with a gross tonnage of 46 328, Symphony of the Seas measures 1 188 feet long with a gross tonnage 228 081. In addition to being much bigger than Titanic in terms of size and capacity; modern cruise ships also offer far more luxury amenities for passengers today compared to what was available aboard Titanic hundred years ago.
