Do Cruise Ship Employees Live on the Ship?

By Alice Nichols

Cruise ships employ a wide range of personnel to manage the daily operations of the vessel, from the captain to the engineering staff. But what about those who actually live on board? Do cruise ship employees live on the ship?

The answer is yes, some cruise ship employees do live on board. Cruise ships have cabins and crew quarters specifically allocated for employees. This includes both permanent and seasonal staff members, with different departments having different accommodations.

Crew Members are those employed by the cruise line to tend to guests’ needs. They include waiters, bartenders, housekeepers, cabin stewards and entertainers who will all have a cabin assigned on board. This cabin is usually shared between two members of staff and located in designated crew quarters away from guest areas.

Officers are responsible for managing a certain area of operations on board such as engineering or navigation. These positions often require a more permanent contract so the employee can be expected to stay in accommodation located in senior officer quarters or even their own cabin depending on rank and experience.

Staff Members such as senior chefs, spa therapists and boutique managers are usually full-time members of staff but may not be required to stay overnight on board if their shift allows them to go ashore after work ends.

Living at sea can be both exciting and challenging for personnel working on a cruise ship; however, most crew members find it an enjoyable experience as they get to explore new places while having all their needs taken care of by the cruise line. It’s also an opportunity for career development as they learn new skills while making friends with people from all over the world – something that would have been difficult to achieve if they were living ashore.
