How Big Was the Titanic Compared to a Cruise Ship?

By Alice Nichols

The Titanic, the most famous ship in history, was 882 feet long and 175 feet high, which made it the largest passenger ship of its time. It was built in Belfast, Ireland in 1912, and made its first voyage across the Atlantic Ocean on April 10, 1912. Unfortunately, on April 15 that same year, the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank to the bottom of the ocean.

The Titanic was much bigger than a modern cruise ship. A modern cruise ship typically ranges from 800 to 1,100 feet long and is usually no more than 200 feet high.

The Titanic was much bigger than any cruise ship today; it was about 20% larger than the largest modern-day cruise ships. In comparison to a modern-day cruise ship, the Titanic had two more decks and 9 extra feet of beam width.

The Titanic had a total capacity of 3,547 passengers and crew. It had three classes of passengers – first-class passengers were offered luxurious amenities such as private suites with hot and cold running water; second-class passengers were offered more modest accommodations with shared bathrooms; and third-class passengers were offered basic accommodations with small cabins.

In addition to its size difference compared to today’s cruise ships, there are other vast differences in amenities between the Titanic and today’s modern cruise ships. Today’s cruises offer an array of activities such as mini golf courses, swimming pools with slides and water parks for children; spas for adults; movie theaters; gyms; ice rinks; rock climbing walls; basketball courts; discos; multiple restaurants offering various cuisines from around the world; shopping malls offering designer brands at discounted prices.

Conclusion:

The Titanic was much bigger than any cruise ship today – about 20% larger than even the largest contemporary vessels – but it lacked many of the comforts that are taken for granted on today’s cruises. Nevertheless, it is remembered fondly as one of history’s most iconic ships.
