By Robert Palmer

It’s hard to talk about cruise ships without bringing up the iconic television show, ‘The Love Boat’. The show aired from 1977 to 1987 and was one of the most successful shows of its time. It featured an all-star cast and followed the lives of the crew and passengers aboard a Pacific Princess Cruise Ship.

So, what cruise ship was used for the Love Boat? The answer is the Pacific Princess, a luxury cruise ship that was originally built in 1971 for Flagship Cruises by Bremer Vulkan in Germany. It was 590 feet long with a capacity of 574 passengers and 311 crew members.

The Pacific Princess first made its debut in June 1972, but it wasn’t until it was purchased by Princess Cruises in 1975 that it became famous. That same year, it starred as the lead vessel in ‘The Love Boat’.

The show filmed over 250 episodes on board the Pacific Princess during its 11-year run.

During its time with Princess Cruises, the Pacific Princess underwent several refurbishments to keep up with changing trends and technology. Some of these changes included adding additional passenger cabins, an upgraded pool deck, modernized restaurants, and other amenities such as a spa area and fitness center.

In 2002, after nearly 30 years of service with Princess Cruises, the Pacific Princess was sold to Pullmantur Cruises who renamed her ‘Monarch’. She continued to operate under this name until 2019 when she was finally retired from service after 48 years at sea.
