What Do Cruise Ship Workers Wear?

By Alice Nichols

Cruise ship workers wear a variety of uniforms and clothing depending on their job and the cruise line they work for. Most cruise ship workers wear a basic uniform, which usually consists of a white shirt, black pants and shoes. Some workers also wear additional attire such as an apron or hat depending on their job.

Cabin Stewards typically wear white shirts with black pants, shoes and an apron. In some cases, they may also be required to wear a hat or visor. They must look neat and professional at all times while on duty, but can dress more casually when off-duty.

Wait Staff are expected to dress in formal attire such as long-sleeved white shirts with black ties, black pants, shoes and an optional vest or jacket. Depending on the cruise line they work for, wait staff may need to be more formally attired by wearing tuxedos or other formal evening attire.

Kitchen Staff typically wear a uniform consisting of white pants, white shirts and white hats. In addition to this uniform, kitchen staff may also be required to wear non-slip shoes for safety reasons as well as protective aprons or gloves.

Deckhands, which include deck officers and crew members responsible for operating the ship’s equipment and performing maintenance tasks, are generally expected to dress in a collared shirt with either khaki shorts or slacks and closed-toed shoes. Deckhands may also need to wear additional protective gear such as hard hats or safety glasses if the job requires it.

Medical Staff, which includes doctors, nurses and medical technicians who provide onboard medical care, typically wear scrubs (a type of loose-fitting clothing) while on duty but can dress more casually when off-duty.

Conclusion: The uniforms that cruise ship workers are expected to wear vary depending on their position and the specific requirements of their employer. However, most cruise ship workers are expected to maintain a neat and professional appearance while on duty regardless of what type of uniform they must wear.
