Where Is the Cruise Ship Marco Polo Now?

By Robert Palmer

The cruise ship Marco Polo is a 5,811-ton vessel, built in 1965 and currently operated by Cruise and Maritime Voyages. It was the last of the great ocean liners to be built in Britain. Since its launch, the Marco Polo has been a floating hotel, visiting ports around the world and providing luxurious experiences for its guests.

The Marco Polo has had an exciting history since its launch. It was originally built for the Soviet Union’s Black Sea Shipping Company under the name Aleksandr Pushkin. In 1991, it was sold to Orient Lines, renamed Marco Polo, and given a major refit, including new engines that doubled its speed from 16 to 32 knots.

In 2008, the Marco Polo was sold to Cruise & Maritime Voyages and underwent another significant refurbishment before recommencing service in 2009. The ship now offers passengers a variety of cruises around Europe and further afield. Some of its most popular destinations include Scandinavia & Russia, Mediterranean & Canary Islands, Baltic Capitals & St Petersburg and Baltic Discovery & Fjords of Norway.

Today, the Marco Polo is still providing luxury cruises for travelers from all over the world. Currently it is sailing off the coast of Spain on an 11-day Iberian Peninsula cruise that will take passengers to Barcelona, Valencia, Gibraltar and other Spanish cities. After that it will sail back to Newcastle on April 25th.
