What Supplies Do You Need for Backpacking?

By Anna Duncan

Backpacking is a great way to explore the outdoors, but it is important to be prepared. Knowing what supplies to bring with you on your backpacking trip will ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable time. Here are some of the basics that you should have in your pack:

Clothing

The type of clothing you need will depend on the climate and season in which you are backpacking. Always pack layers of clothing so that you can adjust as needed for changes in temperature throughout the day. Make sure to include appropriate outerwear, such as a waterproof jacket or raincoat, and protective footwear such as hiking boots or shoes.

Shelter

If you’re planning on camping out during your backpacking trip, then you’ll need some type of shelter. Depending on where you are going and what kind of environment it is, this could range from a simple tarp set up to a more elaborate tent. Be sure to bring items like stakes and rope just in case.

Food & Water

When packing food for your trip, think lightweight and non-perishable items that can easily be carried with you. You’ll also want to make sure that you have enough water for the duration of your journey. A good rule of thumb is at least one liter per person per day.

Navigation & Maps

Having an up-to-date map of the area that you will be visiting is essential for any backpacking trip. You should also bring along a compass or GPS device just in case your map isn’t enough. Knowing how to use both correctly is important so make sure that you get familiar with them before heading out.

First Aid Kit

A first aid kit can come in handy when dealing with minor injuries while out on the trail. Make sure yours includes items like bandages, ointments, tweezers, scissors, gauze pads, antiseptic wipes and other essentials.

In order to make sure that your backpacking trip goes smoothly and safely, it’s important to have all the necessary supplies with you.

Essential items include clothing appropriate for the season and environment; shelter; food & water; navigation & maps; and a first aid kit. With these items packed, you’ll be ready for whatever nature throws at you!
