Is the Titanic Bigger Than a Cruise Ship?

By Alice Nichols

The Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in 1912 after striking an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York City. The Titanic was one of the largest and most luxurious ships of its time and has become one of the most famous ships in history. So, is the Titanic bigger than a cruise ship?

While the Titanic was indeed an impressive vessel, modern cruise ships are much larger. The Titanic was 882 feet long and 92 feet wide, while modern cruise ships can measure up to 1,188 feet long and 215 feet wide. In terms of gross tonnage, the Titanic weighed about 46,328 tons, while modern cruise ships can weigh up to 227,700 tons.

The size difference between the two types of vessels is due to advances in shipbuilding technology over the past century. Modern cruise ships are able to accommodate more passengers because they are built with larger decks and enclosed spaces that provide guests with more comfort and amenities than what was available on the Titanic. Cruise ships also offer more recreational activities than what was available on board the Titanic.

In terms of luxury amenities, modern cruise ships have far surpassed what was available on board the Titanic. Modern cruise ships have cinemas and theaters, swimming pools and hot tubs, fitness centers and spas, multiple restaurants and bars, duty-free shopping malls, casinos and arcades.

Conclusion:

It is clear that modern day cruise ships are much larger than the iconic RMS Titanic in both length and gross tonnage. Additionally, they offer a variety of luxury amenities that were not available on board the Titanic. So while it may be true that no other ship has had as much cultural impact as this legendary liner did over 100 years ago – when it comes to size – there is no denying that today’s cruise ships have surpassed it.
