What Happened to the Little Girl Who Fell From the Cruise Ship?

By Robert Palmer

On July 13th, 2013, a four-year-old Italian girl fell from a cruise ship into the Mediterranean Sea near the coast of Tuscany. Fortunately, she was rescued by the Italian Coast Guard, who were able to locate her and bring her to shore safely. The girl was reportedly playing near a railing on the top deck of the Costa Concordia cruise ship when she fell overboard.

The accident occurred at around 8:00 PM local time while the ship was off the coast of Isola del Giglio, an island in Tuscany. According to reports, no one witnessed the fall and it wasn’t until 30 minutes later that passengers noticed her absence. The captain immediately sounded an alarm and began searching for the missing child.

The search continued throughout the night as Coast Guard vessels raced to reach her before she lost consciousness due to hypothermia. A helicopter was also dispatched in order to search for her more quickly. After hours of searching, they were able to locate her approximately two nautical miles from where she had fallen off from and rescue her from the sea just after 3:00 AM local time.

Upon reaching shore, she was rushed to a hospital where doctors diagnosed her with mild hypothermia but no other complications or injuries. She was released shortly afterwards to be reunited with her relieved family members who had been anxiously waiting for news throughout the night.

The Italian Coast Guard praised the swift response and coordination of all involved in finding and rescuing the little girl saying that it had likely saved her life. It is believed that without them acting so quickly she may have not survived such a long period in cold water without any protection or assistance.

This event serves as an important reminder of how quickly accidents can happen aboard ships like this one and how vital it is for parents or guardians to remain vigilant when traveling with young children on board such vessels at all times.
